| Finally, Warm And Dry. After Mom's Day. Fri, 09 May 2008 21:54:39 -0800
Mother's day brings more cool showery weather to the Northwest, but this time, it gets blown out by a long warm spell that transforms into a hot weather. If it seems early for 90° weather, I think it's because it's been so cool for so long. April 2008 was the coolest April in the Willamette Valley since the mid-70s. People aren't mentally prepared for the weather to get so warm so suddenly. Here's a look at the first 90° day of the last few years:
So it's certainly not unusual to get a 90° day or two in May. In fact most of Portland's high temperature records are in the 90s in May. If the warm to hot weather is a shock, the dry weather should be too. Portland's had a dry spell drought since late January!
If you're a cool weather fan, enjoy the weekend, because the heat is on after that!

| }-- For Parents of Teens --{ Fri, 09 May 2008 12:32:04 -0800 HAPPY FRIDAY!!! AND HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!! Hey, moms of teens (and dads, too).. check this story out on teens and marijuana use. Some of the statistics really surprised me.. like the suicide statistic: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/05/080509105348.htm I hope you find article helpful.. and I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Some of you have noticed that I'm now making semi-regular appearances in the noon show. Here's a photo of our noon show producer Karen ((on the right of the photo)) and her friend as they hiked Angel's Rest. Makes me feel like I need to get out and hike......
See ya Monday...

| .:Hodge Podge: Obesity, Alcohol, etc.: Thu, 08 May 2008 12:02:14 -0800 Hey there.. here's what I have for you. First, the Empower study link.. this is for the nerve zapper they're testing to see if it curbs the appetite. I highly recommend you spend the time reading the FAQ page. This is a long-term study that has some variables you should know about ((that are pretty well spelled out in the FAQ section)): http://www.empowerstudy.com/index.html Here is the link that I referred to in the 5pm health wrap on women and drinking: http://www.webmd.com/mental-health/alcohol-abuse/news/20080506/more-women-drinking-more
And Sean is all over me about not posting replies to the pandemic flu triage story I posted. Okay, he's not all over me.. but he did ask where they were. You know, I didn't get too many replies to that, but here is what I did get: Sean replied first saying: Even though the normal use of triage is to take the most critical first and work down to the least, in a mass incident like that the goal would be to save as many people as possible. Unfortunately, many patients will have to die. But if you could save 10 people while losing one, you'd come out ahead and that's the statistic that people will look back on. Dorothy disagrees: I am appalled at such a suggestion. Why can't the richest country in the world care for ALL of it's citizens? This is why I am so disgusted with the healthcare system in the USA. Shortages? It's always about money and seldom about care. And Mary Jean gives this take: Of course when resources are short, triage decisions must be made. The elderly and unlikely to survive and those with excessive care needs would be pushed aside in favor of others. Beyond an epidemic, the same reasoning can and will be applied to rising health care costs, and perhaps to the availablity of food. Society will have to look more closely at saving the very premature babies also, with high rates of debilitated lives. Injustice will come when the rich get through those filters anyway. We would like for every life to have equal value to every part of society, but that is simply not so. The prime directive is survival. The second directive is to be compassionate.
And a quick picture post. Our intrepid 5pm producer Gina's cat "Kitty" (AKA Toes) WILL actually wear kitty clothes. I would not have thought this possible, knowing that cat. She's the one on the kitty couch. The one at the bottom of the picture is Gina's sister cat Mow.
