| Columbia salmon anglers get a bonus: Sockeye Fri, 20 Jun 2008 14:33:00 EST Chinook anglers on the Columbia River will have an unexpected opportunity to take home a sockeye salmon beginning Saturday when the summer chinook fishing season opens. Because of higher-than-average counts of sockeye passing through the fish ladders at Bonneville Dam, Fish and Wildlife officials in Oregon and Washington decided today to allow anglers to keep sockeye. The river opens Saturday from the Rocky Point/Tongue Point line upstream to Bonneville Dam. The season is scheduled to run through June 28. From Bonneville Dam upstream to Priest Rapids Dam, the season opens Saturday and runs through July 31. All sockeye are considered adults, regardless of size, and are included in the daily bag limit of two adult salmon or steelhead. "The 2008 sockeye run is shaping up to be considerably larger than forecast," Chris Kern, a fish biologist with Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, says in a press release announcing the rule change. "Normally, anglers encounter very few sockeye. "However, catch rates so far this summer have been much higher than normal." Biologists estimate that up to 1,000 sockeye will caught by sport anglers. |
